HOLIER THAN GOD

Below are some snapshots of the upcoming doctrinal thesis on Biblical holiness (of life and outward anthonylangston_edited-2.jpgappearance) by Anthony Langston. Anthony welcomes your comments.

A favorite text of the proponents of traditional positions in any denomination is,"Remove not the ancient landmarks of our fathers." ť(Prov. 22:28)

The question begs asking, "Who are the 'our fathers?'" Who are the fathers of the 20th -21st century Pentecostalism? Is it pastors from the 50's & 60's or district and national leaders?

Have you ever gone to a conference, read a book, or listened to a CD, and learned something you “knew” would help you, maybe even change your life … and then did nothing?! Would you say you’ve done this more than once? And what was the definition of insanity again?

Why do we do this? Because in the desire to implement what we’ve learned, we prematurely turn our attention to altering our “behavior” (or surface responses) instead of allowing our newfound lessons to transform our “beliefs” (or underlying foundation). Ultimately, however, because our beliefs drive and determine our behavior, the two cannot remain out of alignment. So when we attempt to behave in contrast to our beliefs, we’re left with two options: continue to beat ourselves up for failing, or return to our original behavior.

“In the next century, nations as we know it will be obsolete; all states will recognize a single, globaljamesgriffin3.jpg authority. National sovereignty wasn't such a great idea after all."
- Strobe Talbot, President Clinton's Deputy Secretary of State, Time Magazine, July 20th, l992

"It is the system of nationalist individualism that has to go....We are living in the end of the sovereign states....In the great struggle to evoke a Westernized World Socialism, contemporary governments may vanish....Countless people...will hate the new world order....and will die protesting against it." - H.G. Wells, “The New World Order”, 1940

Regardless of personal eschatological viewpoints, we should all agree on the purposes of the 7 ricky_individual_picture_2006_002.jpgchurches of the Book of Revelation:

1. They represent 7 churches contemporary to the Apostle John’s day.
2. The symbolize 7 time periods of the church in epochs of historical record.
3. The demonstrate for us the weaknesses and strength indigenous to all churches in all times periods.

It is from that point of reference that I take a closer look at one church in particular and the relevance of it’s character, actions and attitudes upon the church in this hour. The church of which I speak is Sardis, as recorded in Rev. 3:1-6.

Sardis was a city in Asia Minor, built atop of Mount Tmolus. This mountain was fortified by slopes that were over 1500 feet of near perpendicular rock with the city situated at the top. The fourth side had a gentle slope of sorts and was thus defended by a city wall and gate. This made Sardis a virtually impregnable “fortress city“. They were in a place where they really didn’t have to do much in the way of preparedness or proactivity based solely upon their location.

Heb. 6:1-2 (1) Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on ricky_individual_picture_2006_002.jpgunto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, (2) Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

The imperatives and prerogatives recorded in scripture are all solely based upon a believers desire to both “hear and do” with a kingdom consciousness.

You will find the simple truth threaded through the pages of God’s word; that humanities opportunity to walk in the fullness of God’s destiny, as well as their failure to be endowed with His glory are both outcomes that are solidified by one word - “choice”.

Each of us that know Jesus in the power of a New Birth experience sit in a precarious position as believers. The times that we live in have thrown upon us the weighty responsibility to choose: We will either embrace what we have always known and remain where and who we are, or we will reach for what we have never known and understood so that we might become what we have been set apart for.
