For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.  Rom. 6:14 (NIV)

While sleeping in on Monday morning, due to the exhaustion of traveling 9 hours and then preaching twice … all in a 48 hour span, I was assaulted by one of those utterly impossible individuals whom God seems to have sprinkled into every life to test grace and develop patience in His children.  As I floated through clouds of sleep and pillows of rest - the phone began to ring!!!

By time I got out of bed and managed to find the phone (which was not on the hook like it was supposed to be) while tripping over a pair of heels

I am thrilled to be a participant in the critical mission of reaching Cuba for Christ.

A couple of months ago, I was privileged to meet with James Rennard, missionary to Cuba.  WOW!!!  This young man and his family are the real deal.  They are sold out, literally!  Their testimony and passion for the ripe fields of Cuba are exhilarating and very, very refreshing.

Pastors and church leaders, I encourage you to get involved with the mission Jesus has birthed in the hearts of this beautiful family.  The Church of Champions and New Church Order are donating the funds to secure their housing for their next term which begins in August 2008. There are immediate needs in Cuba.  We need roofing supplies, chairs, sound systems, books, educational materials, and portable fans.  All of these supplies can be purchased in Cuba, so help the Rennard family with a financial donation today.

Soaking Up Real Faith PDF Print E-mail

When I call to remembrance the genuine faith . . . which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.    2 Timothy 1:5

Osmosis is a gradual process whereby a liquid moves through a membrane resulting in an equal concentration of fluid on both sides. It is a scientific phenomenon that we use in North American jargon to explain a natural tendency to allow things into our psych without much effort. We sometimes say things like, "She learned German by osmosis while living there." The truth of the matter is that many things can be acquired by "osmosis" ... including knowledge and belief.

While we don't know exactly what went on in Timothy's household when he was growing up, it looks like he might have acquired his faith in an osmotic fashion: soaking it up from his mother and grandmother who were both believers in Jesus. Timothy's mother (and perhaps his grandmother) was a Jewess, so she likely had an Old Testament understanding of the Messiah (Acts 16:1) which Timothy probably soaked up as well. The fact is, regardless of how they came to believe in Jesus, in time ... Timothy came along with them. We often hear people say, "I can't remember a time when I didn't believe even though I confessed my faith publicly when I was twelve." This comes as a result of a faithful example from a parent or other influence that consistently exemplifies truth faith in Christ.  We must live our lives as proof that there is no other option.

She was the sole passenger aboard a Dutch freighter, and the violent seas had made her seasick, but Corrie ten Boom, Holocaust survivor and global missionary, was determined to conduct services in the mess room. The captain dutifully posted the announcement, and promptly at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning, Corrie showed up to find no one there, only a lad from the kitchen bringing her coffee. “Are you going to stay?” Corrie asked him, “I have a very interesting story to tell you.”

“I don’t want to hear that nonsense,” said the boy who turned and left.

Plopping into a chair, Corrie said, “I never saw so empty a church, just a cup of coffee and myself.” She returned to her cabin weary and discouraged, and on the next Sunday she decided to abandon her efforts. “Lord, I am not a missionary,” she prayed. “Send me back to my watchmaking business.”

Just then she opened her Bible to find a piece of paper. She’d never seen it before and didn’t know where it had come from. The little poem said:
Cowardly, wayward, and weak,
I change with the changing sky,
Today so eager and strong,
Tomorrow not caring to try.
But He never gives in,
And we two shall win,
…Jesus and I

In Luke 10, we find Jesus embroiled in another encounter with the educated theocracy of the day. A young man rises with a challenging question, “What is the key to the door of heaven?”  What followed was a dissertation on the two great commandments.  After Jesus' rebuttal, this young law student, in an apparent attempt to justify himself, asked another provocative question, “Who is my neighbor?

This question was not posed to Jesus' to discover “who” we are to love, but he was asking about the “limit” to which we are to love!  He was asking, "How far do I have to love and to what limit."  Jesus uses this opportunity to explain the chasm between their head knowledge and their heart knowledge. The chasm was great. There was a great divide between what they professed with their lips and what they were doing with hands and feet.  You see, love is like the sun, which does not ask where it can shine, it shines on all things, because of its nature. The nature of love is without limit, without boundary, without color, without religious delineation and without condition.
